A simple guide to caring for leather accessories

You do not need a cupboard full of specialist products to look after a favourite leather accessory. In most cases, a little routine care and sensible storage make the biggest difference.

Start with gentle cleaning. After a busy day, wipe away loose dust with a clean, dry, soft cloth. If your item needs more attention, check the care information that came with it. Different finishes, coatings, suede and textiles can need very different treatment. Test any suitable cleaner on a small, discreet area first, following the product's instructions.

Avoid soaking leather or using harsh household cleaning sprays. A finish that looks tough can still be affected by alcohol, solvents or excessive water. If you are unsure what a surface is made from, do not experiment with strong products.

Let things dry naturally. If a bag or pair of shoes gets wet, blot off excess moisture with a soft cloth and allow it to air-dry away from radiators or direct heat. High temperatures can change the feel or shape of certain materials. Do not rush the process.

Think about storage. A bag is easier to keep in good shape when it is not crushed underneath other things. When appropriate, fill it lightly with clean tissue or soft packing material, and use a breathable dust bag if you have one. For footwear, allow shoes to air out between wears before putting them away.

It is worth checking straps, seams and metal hardware now and then. Small issues are often simpler to deal with early. For visible damage, stubborn stains or delicate materials such as suede, a reputable specialist is a better choice than an improvised home remedy.

Most importantly, use and enjoy the things you own. Everyday accessories are there to be part of your life. Treat them with a little care, store them sensibly, and let them develop their own place in your routine.

Specific care always depends on the item and its materials; contact SHUCLUB if you need more guidance about a particular product.
